japanvoice =Wing Saber is Optimus Prime's Powerlinx partner, and a homage design to Japan's G1 eraStar Saber . He can combine with Optimus Prime, and in Japan this form is called Wing Convoy.Wing Saber's tech spec indicated he was a transport for the Cybertronian high council before becoming a warrior - which he far prefers. His jet abilities make him a lethal foe for Decepticons in the air. He is immensely loyal to Optimus Prime. This hasn't stopped Megatron from trying to sway him to his side though.
Wing Saber reappeared in the follow-up series "Transformers: Cybertron". His tech spec indicated he was still a formidable elite warrior with added maturity. However, he still wants to prove himself to Optimus Prime - in stark contrast to the events of the show.
Animated series
Wing Saber started life as the humble guard Wing Dagger. He served as one of the Decepticon criminal Shockblast's jailors. In the midst of a Decepticon raid to free Shockblast the one-eyed Decepticon broke free and attacked everything in his path, killing Dagger's fellow guard Padlock and crushing him beneath a massive Energon Tower. This was not the end, as he was rebuilt by Rad and Primus as Wing Saber.
Wing Saber joined with Optimus Prime's team to bring Shockblast to justice. He served as a valiant member of Prime's team as he was the only Autobot with an air-based alternate mode. He even gained the ability to
Powerlink with Prime thanks to Primus and the Spark of Combination. However, his quest to bring Shockblast down often impaired his judgment. He did manage to capture him, but Shockblast soon escaped again. After many battles against the Decepticons andTerrorcon s, Wing Saber gave his Spark to empower Optimus Supreme against theUnicron possessedGalvatron .In "Transformers: Cybertron", Wing Saber (Sonic Bomber in Japan) returned to his former partners with a new, somewhat arrogant, outlook on life. After a falling out in the past involving the life of a human astronaut, Wing Saber took off into space and had been missing for most of the time since the ending of the Powerlinx Battles. He returned after encountering the Omega Frequency which was broadcasting to Cybertron after the Speed Planet key was inserted into the
Omega Lock . It is not known exactly why, but some speculate that it was due to Wing Saber's arrogance, the combination with Prime he once had in Energon was lost. Once returning to Earth, Wing Saber would have a brief conflict with Optimus Prime before making peace and learning to combine with his commander once again, in order to meet the threat of Starscream.Wing Saber would remain a trusted ally to Optimus Prime once their conflict was resolved. He ventured to
Gigantion where he helped lead the Autobots to victory. He was forced by Lori to follow and defeat Thunderblast together with her. After the demise ofGalvatron and the black hole, Wing Saber chose to return to space on a personal adventure. This event would not last long as he was soon to encounter Starscream in deep space, signaling for assistance. In theclosing credits , Wing Saber can be seen battling a flame-empowered Starscream, along with Mudflap and Landmine. In "Galaxy Force", the original Japanese version of Cybertron, Sonic Bomber was a new character, and had nothing to do with Wing Saber. (Sonic Bomber is a homage to another Japanese-exclusive Autobot.) Instead, Sonic Bomber was a former soldier under Galaxy Convoy's command, who soon rebelled and went his own ways before reuniting with Galaxy Convoy after Starscream became Super Starscream. In the plot of Galaxy Force, the Cybertrons faced off against Super Starscream. Liger Convoy was defeated and broken apart. Sonic Bomber failed to defeat Super Starscream as well. Seeing the power of linking up Sonic Bomber suggested he link with Galaxy Convoy. After a few failed attempts they joined together into Sonic Convoy.
Wing Saber's Cybertron link sequence contains some visual references to the Final Fusion sequence from the 1997 anime
The King of Braves GaoGaiGar . In particular, Wing Saber himself takes the place of the stealth bomber StealthGao, and the transformation of Optimus Prime's head is very similar in nature.Promotional comics
Wing Saber made his only comics appearance in the Transformers: Energon Promotional Comic #4, where he rescued Prime and Hot Shot from Megatron and a Decepticon ambush. He Powerlinked with Prime and managed to drive off all the Decepticons before Autobot reinforcements arrived.
