West Gippsland Latrobe Football League

West Gippsland Latrobe Football League

The West Gippsland Latrobe Football League is the major Australian rules football League in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia.

History

The WGLFL was formed through the merger of the West Gippsland Football League with the Gippsland Latrobe Football League in 2002. From 2002 until 2004, the league comprised a premier division, consisting of the Gippsland-Latrobe clubs with Drouin and Garfield, and a western division, comprising most of the former WGFL clubs.

After the 2004 season, the western division was dissolved, the clubs from this league moving to other competitions, such as the Alberton Football League, Ellinbank & District Football League and the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League.

Clubs

The WGLFL currently comprises nine teams in the Latrobe Valley and West Gippsland areas:

There are four grades of football: Seniors, Reserves, Under 18s and Under 16s.

The Latrobe area is currently the only large regional centre in Victoria that does not have a representative team participating in the Victorian Football League, despite the fact that the area within a 25km radius of Moe (Warragul, Moe, Morwell, Traralgon and other smaller towns) has a population well over 100,000, as large or larger than places such as Bendigo and Ballarat that do have teams participating in the VFL.

The region does have a representative team in the TAC Cup competition, Gippsland Power.
