Jansen is a Dutch and Low German patronymic surname meaning son of Jan, a common derivative of Johannes. It is equivalent to the English surname Johnson. The near homonyms "Jensen" and "Jansson" are its Danish, Norwegian and Swedish counterparts.

Combined with the alternative spelling Janssen it was and probably is the most common name in the Netherlands (1947 data), while the variant Janssens is the second most common name in Belgium (2001 data).
