The Greater Hartford Academy of Mathematics and Science or GHAMAS is a regional high school located at The Learning Corridor in Hartford, Connecticut. It is run by the Capital Region Education Council (CREC), one of 6 Regional Educational Service Centers (RESC) in Connecticut. The learning corridor was a block that was taken off Trinity College to help educate more people around us. Trinity college is involved in some of the projects with GHAMAS because they are right next to each other as well as Hartford Hospital is right down the street from both locations.

GHAMAS is a state-of-the-art educational facility. It provides a well-designed environment conducive to collaboration and teamwork, and an emphasis on achieving success at the student's pace. Labs at the Academy include the Robotics Lab, Physics Lab, Earth Science Lab, Photonics Lab, Biology Lab, Cell Culture Lab, Greenhouse & Potting Lab, Biochemistry Lab, Chemistry Lab, Special Instrumentation Lab, and Computer Science Lab. There are also several student laboratories, used by students to conduct research. GHAMAS currently runs a Biodiesel Project under a grant from Toshiba Corporation, in which its students are being given an opportunity to do real research in creating biodiesel from algae. On top of that, one Friday of every month during R Block{known as recess for the morning students only, it occurs once a week, on Friday}, one R block is served as the purpose of listening to a speaker for about one hour. Every month there is a different speaker and it is usually someone who is willing to offer internship or opportunity for interested students while coordinating a program with the school itself. Is a great way to notice and learn about some careers available in the Math and Science field related areas.

GHAMAS is a member of the NCSSSMST. This is an organization of secondary schools that promote Mathematics, Science, and Technology schools. The director of the Academy is Eric Bernstein, J.D.

ubjects taught at Ghamas

Physics- Foundations in Physics, Electronics, Robotics, Photonics, Electricity and Magnetism, Nuclear Physics, Thermodynamics and Fluid Flow, and Classical Mechanics Chemistry- Honors Chemistry, Ap Chemistry

Biology- Honors Biology, Ap biology, Molecular Biology

Math- Algebra I, Geometry, algebra II, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus BC, AB, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Introduction to Differential Equations, Multivariable Calculus

Computer Science- Computer science I & II - AP Level

These subjects are taught for only half-a-day. If in 9th or 10th grade, they are taught from 7.30-10.30 If in 11th or 12th grade, the subjects are taught 12.30-4.15 in the afternoon. GHAMAS is a half-a-day school only providing classes in the math and science field and students go to their home school for the other half of the day to get the other required classes needed to graduate, such as English, Social Studies, World Language, etc..

Learning Environment

GHAMAS's state of the art facilities gives it an edge above the rest. Students know this and take great pride in going to GHAMAS.

Students have been known to form great friendships with one another.

GHAMAS would just be a normal magnet school if it wasn't for the wonderful staff and students that gives GHAMAS its superb learning environment. With both of these GHAMAS is almost always an interesting place to be. Between singing "Happy Birthday" in Hebrew in Earth Science, hearing one of your math teachers talk about his cat Pythagoras, and countless other comical things, GHAMAS balances its academic and comical sides in a most harmonious manner, to stimulate a learning environment like no other.

Also, GHAMAS will be running a pilot 9th and 8th grade full day program, though much of the student body strongly opposes it because they claim it is "Taking a wonderful program, and watering it down, making it less of a focus on its name sake of Math and Science". In the near future GHAMAS will be adding a 7th grade program.

This makes many issues arise, including: How will school resources be evenly distributed as they were before the addition of the incoming grades/programs, How will there be adequate space, and how well will the students interact with each other amongst the new programs?
