May 21 ,1831 –April 16 ,1909 ) was a nineteenth century politician, lawyer, editor and proprietor fromIowa .Born in
Newton, New Jersey , Cummings attended public schools inMuncy, Pennsylvania as a child. He was editor of a newspaper inSchuylkill County, Pennsylvania in 1850, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1855. He moved toWinterset, Iowa in 1856 and served as prosecuting attorney forMadison County, Iowa from 1856 to 1858. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Cummings enlisted in theUnion Army in July, 1861 and was madecaptain of Company F of the4th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment . He accepted the commission ofcolonel of the39th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment onSeptember 12 ,1862 and was honorably discharged onDecember 22 ,1864 . Afterwards, he became editor and proprietor of the "Winterset Madisonian" in 1869 and was elected a Republican to theUnited States House of Representatives in 1876, serving from 1877 to 1879, being unsuccessful for reelection in 1878. Cummings died inWinterset, Iowa onApril 16 ,1909 and was interned in Winterset Cemetery in Winterset.External links
