The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Caracas , is an ecclesiastical territory over which it exercises ecclesiastical jurisdiction, the Archbishop of Caracas, as a representative of the Roman Catholic Church in Venezuela. It was founded as the Diocese of Caracas on June 20, 1637, and was later elevated to the rank of a metropolitan see on November 27, 1803. This episcopal see occupies a territory of about 790 square kilometers. He is considered a metropolitan see, of the Roman Catholic Church in Venezuela, with the suffragan sees of Guarenas, La Guaira, and Los Teques. The current Archbishop is Cardinal Jorge Urosa, since his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI on September 19, 2005. The Archbishop of Caracas is also the Primate of the Church in Venezuela.

History

Originally, the Episcopal See was established in 1531, according to the Pope Bull Pro Excellentia praeeminentia issued by Pope Clement VII in St. Peter's in Rome on 21 June of that year and was based in Coro, Falcón State, then the capital of Venezuela . Been vacant since 1721 to 1727.

The Diocese of Caracas was elevated to Archdiocese for the Bull In universalis ecclesiae regimine issued by Pope Pius VII in the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome on November 24, 1803, until this date was under the jurisdiction of the Ecclesiastical Province Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Subsequently, by Royal Decree of July 16, 1804, we gave notice to the creation of this Archdiocese, was assigned and suffragan diocese of Merida, Maracaibo and Guayana, your first archbishop was Francisco de Ibarra, also was the first bishop born in Venezuela at receive episcopal ordination
