Andrew Francis Slaughter (born 29 September 1960, London) is a United Kingdom politician. He is Member of Parliament for Ealing, Acton and Shepherd's Bush in London and was previously Leader of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

Early life

Slaughter was educated at the independent Latymer Upper School and the University of Exeter, gaining an LLB after studying [http://www.law.ex.ac.uk Law] . He worked in Hammersmith Central Library in 1979, and is a barrister specialising in criminal and housing law, as well as a former Labour Party researcher for Michael Meacher. He is not married.

He became a Hammersmith and Fulham councillor for Gibbs Green ward in 1986, then from 2002 North End ward and council leader in 1996. When the government moved towards executive mayors, Hammersmith and Fulham was one of the first councils to style their leader 'mayor'. However, the measure initially failed to become law and Slaughter eventually reverted his title to 'leader'.

Parliamentary career

He stood at the Uxbridge by-election in July 1997.

Slaughter would eventually gain a seat in Westminster in 2005 as the elected MP for Ealing, Acton and Shepherd's Bush in London. In this capacity he replaced the retired Clive Soley.

Labour Party members of the new Hammersmith Constituency Labour Party selected Slaughter as the Labour candidate for the Hammersmith seat on the 30th November 2006. Thus Slaughter will represent the Labour party in this new constituency at the next general election.
