Bobby wants to attend a comedy summer camp, but Hank vetoes the idea and arranges for him to work at
Strickland Propane instead. When Bobby usescomedy to divert everyone's attention away from a grill shortage during a big sales event, Hank comes to appreciate his talent for making people laugh. As a result of Bobby's success in averting the potential crisis, the Propaniacs, a comedy troupe (consisting of Bobby, Luanne, Joe Jack, and Donna from Accounting), are formed in order to motivate Strickland Propane's sales staff with a series of short improvisational comedy routines related to propane and propane accessories. The act is so well received thatBuck Strickland sends the Propaniacs to his his company's other branches to help sagging sales.Eventually the act is asked to perform at a propane convention, but things start to go wrong as soon as the show starts. First Joe Jack arrives drunk, after which Hank insists that Charlie Fortner, the president of the Texas Association of Propane Dealers, appear in a sketch. Fortner is pulled onstage against his protests, Joe Jack ruins the sketch, and a horrified Hank discovers that Fortner's self-consciousness stems from his use of adult diapers.
Despite Hank's truthful insistence that the incident was unintentional, Fortner forbids the Propaniacs from performing at conventions or propane outlets. Peggy books the troupe at the Arlen Mall, out of Fortner's reach; even though the humor falls flat in front of a sparse crowd, Hank enjoys watching Bobby and the others put on the show.
