Alton Steel

Alton Steel is a steel manufacturer, based in Alton, Illinois. The company is a reincarnation of the Laclede Steel Company, which halted operations of its mill in 1998. History

Laclede Steel was incorporated in 1911, and owned one electric furnace, and owned mills in city-state|Alton|Illinois, city-state|Fairless Hills|Pennsylvania, city-state|Vandalia|Illinois. Its products included strip, hot rolled bars, wire and plate.

Laclede was one of the companies contracted by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to supply steel for construction of the World Trade Center in 1967.cite news |title=Contracts Totaling $74,079,000 Awarded for the Trade Center |publisher=The New York Times |date=January 24, 1967] The Port Authority chose to use many different, smaller steel suppliers such as Laclede, bidding on smaller portions of steel, rather than buy larger amounts from a single source such as Bethlehem Steel or U.S. Steel as a cost-saving measure.cite book |author=Gillespie, Angus K. |year=1999 |title=Twin Towers: The Life of New York City's World Trade Center |publisher=Rutgers University Press |pages=p. 83]

Working in the steel mill was featured in an episode of Dirty Jobs.
