Indian general election, 1996

Indian general election, 1996

General elections were held in India in 1996. They resulted in a fractured mandate for the the 11th Lok Sabha; the BJP emerged with a plurality of 161 seats, followed by Congress with 140. BJP was invited to form the government, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee formed a cabinet, but could not convince any other parties to support it. Thus, the BJP government lasted for 13 days. Subsequently, practically all of the non-BJP, non-Congress parties got together and formed the United Front (India) with external support from Congress; this government lasted two years through two Prime Ministers, H.D. Deve Gowda and I.K. Gujral.
