Injuries

The 1992 season was marred by a series of serious injuries. After losing rookie tight end Johnny Mitchell in the season opener, in week 2, defensive end Jeff Lageman was lost for the season due to a knee injury. By week 10, Al Toon, a wide receiver, suffered another concussion, the 9th of his career. Shortly afterward, Toon announced his retirement at the age of 29 as a result.

The most frightening injury took place in Week 13 against Kansas City. Early in the 2nd half, defensive end Dennis Byrd collided with teammate Scott Mersereau while attempting to sack Chief quarterback Dave Krieg. Byrd was left paralyzed as a result. (He eventually did recover, thanks in part to an experimental steroid treatment).

The next week, still thinking about Byrd's injury, the Jets played their most inspirational game of the year by beating the eventual AFC Champion Buffalo Bills 24-17.
