Los Angeles General Services Police
- Los Angeles General Services Police
The Los Angeles General Services Police is a law enforcement agency providing police and security services to the Los Angeles City Hall, the Los Angeles Central Library, the Los Angeles Zoo, and the city's parks, having similar duties of the Los Angeles County Office of Public Safety.
Gary S. Newton is the Police Chief of the department.
The department was established as a security force in 1979. A Peace Officer component was created in the late 1980s and reorganized in 2003 when Los Angeles City Council Members Wendy Gruel and Jack Weiss proposed to create the Office of Public Safety by merging the many City security services into one centralized division of the Department of General Services.
This department is not to be confused with the LAPD or the Los Angeles County Office of Public Safety which are separate agencies. As of 2007, GSPD currently employs 112 police and over 200 security officers. The department patrols over 400 parks, 72 libraries and 900 municipal buildings. It is the 10th largest Police agency in L.A. County.
