Rufus Paine Spalding (May 3, 1798 – August 29, 1886) was a nineteenth century politician, lawyer and judge from Ohio.

Early life

Born in West Tisbury, Massachusetts, Spalding graduated from Yale College in 1817, studied law and was admitted to the bar. He moved to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1820 and commenced practicing law until 1821 when he moved to Warren, Ohio to continue practicing. He moved to Ravenna, Ohio in 1835 and, once again, commenced the practice of law.

Politics

Spalding was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1839 to 1842, serving as Speaker of the House for one term, and an Associate Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court from 1849 to 1852. Afterwards, he commenced practicing law in Cleveland, Ohio. He was elected a Republican to the United States House of Representatives in 1862, serving from 1863 to 1869, not being a candidate for renomination in 1868. Afterwards, he resumed practicing law. He married Lucretia A Swift on Oct 1, 1822. they had at least three children; Charles G., Elizabeth B. and Col. Zephaniah Swift Spalding. Lucretia died between 1850–1858. His second wife was Nancy Pierson whom he betrothed on Jan 11 1859.

Death

Spalding died in Cleveland, Ohio on August 29, 1886 and was interred in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.
