- USS Swift (AM-122)
USS "Swift" (AM-122) was an "Auk"-class minesweeper acquired by the
U.S. Navy for the dangerous task of removing mines from minefields laid in the water to prevent ships from passing.The second U.S. Naval vessel to be named the "USS Swift" was a minesweeper (AM-122) laid down on
27 June 1942 by theJohn H. Mathis Co.,Camden, New Jersey ; launched on5 December 1942 ; sponsored by Mrs. J. E. Sheedy; and commissioned on29 December 1943 , Lt. Comdr. R. K. Cockey,USNR , in command. "Swift" held her shakedown cruise atLittle Creek, Virginia , and on11 February 1944 entered theNorfolk, Virginia Navy Yard for alterations.Atlantic Ocean operations
Upon completion, "Swift" sailed to
New York City to await the formation of aconvoy . The convoy was formed and sailed, with "Swift" as escort, on25 March forEngland . It arrived atFalmouth, England on19 April , and "Swift" proceeded toPlymouth, England , where she reported to Naval Forces,Europe , for duty. She operated out of Plymouth andTorquay, England , until the end of May.As a unit of
Mine Division (MinDiv) 18, "Swift" sailed fromTorquay, England , on5 June forNormandy, France , where she began sweeping mines off the "Utah" beachhead. She swept mines from dawn to dusk and acted as "E-boat " patrol at night. On D + l (7 June )USS Tide (AM-125)"Tide" (AM-125) was mined and sunk while being towed by "Swift". "Swift" remained there until17 June when she returned toPlymouth, England . Seven days later, she returned toFrance to aid in sweeping a lane forbattleships so they could bombardCherbourg and returned toEngland ."Swift" was next routed to
Algeria and sailed from Plymouth on1 August . She arrived atOran on6 August and was assigned to the invasion fleet for the assault on southernFrance ,Operation Dragoon . "Swift" sortied with the fleet on10 August and was off the landing beaches in the early morning ofD-Day ,15 August . She helped clear the transport area and swept lanes for landing craft. After the troops were ashore, the minesweeper remained on station, sweeping by day and performing antisubmarine and “E-boat ” patrol by night. "Swift" escorted aconvoy toNaples, Italy , on16 October and returned toGolfe de Juan ,France . She made daily sweeps up theRiviera , past the German frontier, to the vicinity ofSan Remo . The minesweeper returned toOran on21 December and joined aconvoy bound for theUnited States which sailed on28 December 1944 ."Swift" arrived at
Norfolk, Virginia , in mid-January 1945 and entered the navy yard there for an overhaul in preparation for duty in the Pacific. The work was completed on5 March and, after refresher training, she departed forMiami, Florida , withUSS Sway (AM-120)"Sway" (AM-120) and "Symbol" (AM-123). The minesweepers arrived there on30 March and air-searchradar was installed on Swift.Pacific Ocean operations
The ships departed on
26 April 1945 for thePanama Canal Zone and theU.S. West Coast , arriving atSan Diego, California , on15 May . "Swift" sailed two days later with USS "Symbol" and "Threat" (AM-124) forHawaii . She arrived atPearl Harbor on the 26th and sailed toGuam six days later. Upon her arrival atApra Harbor , she was routed onward toUlithi . "Swift" stood out ofUlithi on30 June as an escort forconvoy UOK-32 en route toOkinawa and arrived atKerama Retto on6 July . She swept mines in theEast China Sea from 10 to15 July and from 13 to25 August ."Swift" sailed from
Okinawa on31 August forTsugaru Strait , betweenHonshū andHokkaidō ,Japan , and swept mines there from 7 to17 September . After an upkeep period atOminato Bay ,Honshū , from the 18th to the 22d, she swept westward of the strait from23 September to13 October . The ship operated out ofOminato until she began clearing the “Klondike” area of theEast China Sea from26 October to8 November . "Swift" was overhauled at Sasebo and then, on26 November , sailed toKiirin , Formosa, to sweep mines off the northwest coast. On11 December , she moyed to thePescadore Islands and sweptFormosa Strait for 10 days. The minesweeper sailed forShanghai, China , on21 December 1945 and arrived there the next day. "Swift" remained there until early January 1946 when she departed for the west coast of theUnited States , viaPearl Harbor . She arrived atSan Diego, California , in February and was assigned to thePacific Reserve Fleet , in commission, in reserve. "Swift" was placed out of commission, in reserve, on4 June 1946 .econd commissioning
On
17 April 1951 , it was decided to activate Swift; and she was placed in commission again on19 December 1951 . After overhaul and refresher training, the minesweeper was assigned toMine Squadron 5 for duty and operated along theCalifornia coast until October 1952."Swift" made a voyage to
Hawaii from28 October to1 December 1952 . On3 February 1953 she stood out ofLong Beach, California , en route to theFar East and theKorea n war zone. She called atPearl Harbor in mid-February and arrived at Sasebo,Japan , on9 March . The ship sailed forKorea and operated in the East Coast Operating Zone and atHungnam until28 April . She was inKorea again from24 May until25 August , operating betweenWonsan ,Pusan , andCheju Do . "Swift" sailed from Sasebo on4 September en route toCalifornia , viaPearl Harbor ."Swift" arrived at
Long Beach, California , on27 September 1953 and conducted local operations along theCalifornia coast until October 1954. She deployed to the Far East again from21 October 1954 to the spring of 1955 when she returned to local operations atSan Diego, California . "Swift" was reclassified from AM-122 to MSF-122, Minesweeper, Flat (steel hulled) on7 February 1955 .Decommissioning
She was decommissioned again on
13 December 1955 and assigned to thePacific Reserve Fleet . Swift was struck from theNavy list on1 July 1972 and scrapped.Awards
