Woodley, Greater Manchester

Woodley, Greater Manchester

Woodley is a residential area of Stockport, a town in Greater Manchester, North West England.

The area is next to the areas of Bredbury and Romiley in Stockport. It is on the boundary with Tameside, bordering initially with Gee Cross, which is next to the Market Town of Hyde. Historically, the area was part of the palatine county of Cheshire. The name Woodley translates to 'a clearing in the wood', and is named so because the area contains a lot of woodland, particularly around the Peak Forest Canal which runs through it.

Woodley Sports Football Club of the Unibond League is situated in Woodley. The Peak Forest Canal runs through Woodley and features a long tunnel.

Woodley railway station is on the Hope Valley Line.

Woodley Primary School

Woodley has a Primary School - Woodley Primary School, which was previously called Woodley Infant and Junior schools. The school also ran a nursery which was located next to (and connected to) Woodley Methodist Church. The building that was used for the nursery is in fact the original building that was used for the school, before it was relocated to its current location in the 60s. In 2007, it was speculated that the nursery school building may be sold to 'Kiddie Winks' - a children's day care - which would be the location of their second Day Care Centre (The First being in Compstall), however this did not happen. As of 2008, 'right of way' issues mean that the building is still unused.

The Schools current location is at the end of Sherwood Road and sits nicely between Hyde Road, Werneth Road Pennine Road and Station Road. The School and some of the surrounding estates were built upon the grounds where Springbank farm once stood.

The school is very highly regarded in the local area for its high results and OFSTED reports. The school also plays an active roll in the local community.

Its neighbouring primary school, Greave School, is located just up the road from Woodley in Greave. It too is highly regarded in the community.

After education in Woodley Primary School, most students feed to either Werneth High School or Marple Hall for their secondary education.
