- York & Selby Lines
The York & Selby Lines is the name given to a group of services in the West Yorkshire Metro area, connecting
Leeds with places to its north and east: as well as theNorthern Rail local services to York and Selby, the services extend to:
* Newcastle byFirst TransPennine Express andCrossCountry
* Scarborough by TransPennine Express
*Middlesbrough by TransPennine Express
* Hull by TransPennine ExpressThe routes
Before the 1923 Grouping all the routes over which these services operate were worked by the North Eastern Railway. The routes are as follows (Stations in bold are still open):
Leeds - Micklefield
* Leeds New station (now part of the
Leeds City station )
* Marsh Lane: the original terminus of the line into Leeds: now closed
*Cross Gates
* here was the junction of a line toWetherby
*Garforth
* here was the junction of a line toCastleford via Kippax
* East Garforth
*Micklefield here is the junction between the two routes and the limit of the [http://www.wymetro.com/PassesandSavings/ MetroCard] ticket schemeelby route
*
South Milford andSherburn-in-Elmet
* here are connections with the line from Castleford to York ("Gascoigne Wood Junction")
* Hambleton (closed station)
*Selby
* here was a swing bridge over the River Ouse
* Between Selby and Brough there were stations serving the following places:
**Hemingbrough (closed 1967).
**Wressle
** Howden (also served by theHull and Barnsley Railway (HBR)
**Eastrington also served by the HBR
**Staddlethorpe (now calledGilberdyke ) where a branch comes in fromGoole andDoncaster .
**Broomfleet
* Brough andElloughton
* two more stations serving:
** Ferriby
**Hessle
* here were the three large marshalling yards serving Hull , Inward Yard, Outward Yard and Priory Yard.
* Hull Paragon station forKingston upon Hull York route
This section of the route is also called the
Dearne Valley line (DVL)
*Church Fenton here the DVL heads south forDoncaster ; there was also a branch from here toHarrogate viaWetherby
*Ulleskelf andKirkby Wharf
* there were two places served by the railway now closed:
** Bolton Percy
** Copmanthorpe
