"Kalnyshevsky Petro" (1690? – 31 October 1803) was the last
Koshovyi Otaman of theZaporozhian Host in 1762 and during 1765 to 1775. Kalnyshevsky took part in the Russo-Turkish war of 1768-1774 and was honoured with a gold medal with brilliants for courage.Being a head of the
Zaporozhian Host Kalnyshevsky defended the rights ofcossacks and their independence from increasing Imperial RussianTsar ist influence, and encouraged agriculture development and trade in the Zaporizhiansteppe .After the disbandment of
Zaporizhian Sich byPeter Tekeli , Kalnyshevsky was arrested, tried and exiled to theSolovetsky Monastery , where he spent 26 years in a cold and dark cell. Three times a year he was allowed outside to breathe the open air.
