Route description
Delaware Route 3 heads north on Edgemoor Road from Exit 4 of I-495 in an industrial area. It crosses over the Amtrak Northeast Corridor and then intersects U.S. Route 13. Past this intersection, DE 3 enters a more residential area and continues north. It then intersects U.S. Route 13 Business (Philadelphia Pike) and forms a concurrency with that road until Washington Boulevard (Washington Street Extension). At this point, the road turns northwest onto Washington Boulevard before heading north on Marsh Road and forming the west boundary of Bellevue State Park. It then meets Exit 9 of Interstate 95. DE 3 then continues north through more suburban developments and passes to the west of Arden. It then heads north to its terminus at Delaware Route 92 (Naamans Road).[1][2]
History
What is now DE 3 existed as a county road by 1920.[3] By 1924, the road was upgraded to a state highway between Philadelphia Pike and Harvey Road.[4] The state highway was extended north to Naamans Road by 1931.[5] When Delaware first numbered its state highways by 1936, what is now DE 3 remained unnumbered.[6] By 1968, DE 3 was designated to run from US 13 (now US 13 Business) north to DE 92 along Marsh Road.[7] DE 4 was extended onto the Washington Street Extension portion of present-day DE 3 by 1971.[8] DE 4 was removed from Washington Street Extension by 1981.[9] By 1984, DE 3 was extended to I-495 in Edgemoor. At this time, DE 3 was realigned to follow Washington Street Extension from Marsh Road to a concurrency with US 13 Business, heading southwest along that route before heading southeast along Edgemoor Road.[10]
