census GR|2 of 2000, there were 991 people, 396 households, and 287 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 1 people per square mile (0/km²). There were 601 housing units at an average density of 1 per square mile (0/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.16% White, 1.21% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.91% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. 5.55% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 20.5% were of German, 18.1% American, 15.4% English and 7.4% Irish ancestry according toCensus 2000 .There were 396 households out of which 30.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.20% were married couples living together, 4.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% were non-families. 22.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the county the population was spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 27.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 104.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.20 males.
