Sabiha Rumani Malik was born in India, to a Sufi family. Having worked as Creative Director of

Norman Foster, Baron Foster of Thames Bank [ [http://www.guardian.co.uk/saturday_review/story/0,,321525,00.html The Guardian] ] , Sabiha founded the Diamonds For Humanity Foundation in 2004, a global initiative aimed at returning the benefits of diamonds to the often conflict-ridden and poverty-stricken communities where they are mined. The foundation was inaugurated in April 2005 by the United Nations.Using funds generated by a sister for-profit organisation, Diamonds For Humanity Inc., which produces and markets diamond jewellery, the foundation intends to strengthen institutions, engage citizens, develop leaders, build communities and foster partnerships within the African communities that produce the diamonds. It aims to return the benefits of diamond mining by actively supporting models that contribute to transformational change at an institutional level, as well as organisations that are aligned with the mission of working to achieve sustainable progress in the program areas. She was shortlisted for The Social & Humanitarian award at the The Asian Women of Achievement Awards in 2006. The Social & Humanitarian award is for special women involved in social and humanitarian work, whether they are individuals working for non-profit organisations or the corporate world contributing to the voluntary sector.
