Pearson Scholarship Hall, founded in 1952, is one of twelve
Scholarship Halls at theUniversity of Kansas , and one of six men's halls in the Scholarship Hall system. Pearson houses (at most) 47 men, who live paired with another resident in traditional two person rooms. Like all other "schol hall" inhabitants, residents pay a reduced rate than those living in a standard University of Kansasresidence hall . In exchange, residents have regular weekly work shifts, which range from cooking meals to cleaning restrooms.The Building
The basement level houses the kitchen, dining room, pantry, dish room, rec room, laundry room, and storage room. The dining room is a popular study spot for many residents. The rec room is equipped with a large television with DVD and VHS players, along with several couches, a pool table, a ping-pong table, and an electronic dart board. On the ground floor is the living room, which houses a
grand piano , bookshelves with volumes of reference material, cases of awards the hall has received, and couches and tables where residents regularly study. Also on this level is the foyer and mail room, the SHD's room, and three dorm rooms, two of which traditionally serve as single rooms.The second and third levels are dominated by resident rooms, with a single communal bathroom each. Each room is, in its standard configuration, equipped with two desks and two chairs, a set of bunk beds, and rubbish bins for trash and recyclables. Rooms are wired for phone and Internet access, and each room is assigned its own phone number. Internet access is an extension of the standard University of Kansas ResNet system, and all safeguards and protection extends here.
Lupi Day
Lupi Day (pronounced Loopy) is most likely the best known Pearson tradition. Every Thursday evening, without fail, the residents congregate on their deck. At 11:55 PM, they yell out the Lupi Day Chant to the other schol halls. Then each hall is greeted with the words "Happy Lupi Day (Name of the Hall)!", to which that hall will either reply, gaining a cheer from Pearson, or choose not to reply, gaining a 'boo' from the residents. After all halls have been called, the cheer is again recited. When all is done, the residents invite the other halls to come and socialize in their dining room, with donuts to enjoy.

Although its origins remain somewhat of a mystery, the actual event was rekindled in 1992 by Pearsonites Matt and Todd after reading about it in an old Pearson yearbook. The event was actually spelled "Lupe Day" (Still pronounced "loopy") and the festivities occurred on the eve of a full moon at the strike of midnight. The chant was then followed up by a series of howling and the oldmen marking of territory off the third floor fire escape (prior to the deck being built). The festivities often ended in the sacrificial act of fountaining of select newmen - typically those caught studying during the sacred event. The current and more acceptable tradition has "evolved" some from the original design.
