The county seat was moved in 1830 to Clinton in the central part of the county. During the American Civil War, the Confederates established Fort de Russey on the strategically located 80- to convert|120|ft|m|sing=on bluffs across the river from Belmont Missouri. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant attacked Belmont in his first battle but was repelled by Confederate forces from Columbus. The site of the Battle of Columbus-Belmont is now a state park. *"From The Kentucky Encyclopedia."
