25 July 1812 inSan Mateo ,Venezuela and resulted in the Royalist victory ofJuan Domingo Monteverde against the forces ofFrancisco de Miranda . Miranda was forced to surrender and sign a ceasefire which the Spanish generalJuan Domingo Monteverde did not honor, sending Miranda to prison where he would die in 1816. Monteverde killed thousands ofPatriots afterwards, including some supporters among women and children. The battle also effectively ended theFirst Republic of Venezuela andSimon Bolivar would later hold the view that Miranda's surrender was equivalent to treason.References
