San Francisco Breeders' Cup Mile
- San Francisco Breeders' Cup Mile
The San Francisco Breeders' Cup Mile is a Grade II race for Thoroughbred horses held on the grass at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, California. For four-year-olds and upwards, it's Northern California's richest race, run at a distance of one mile on the turf. The San Francisco Mile offers a purse of $300,000 (plus $100,000 - Breeders' Cup).
Native Diver won this race in 1963 and 1967.
Golden Gate Fields has dropped the San Francisco Mile Stakes from its stakes schedule for the 2008 spring meeting. The race has been Golden Gate’s most prestigious but the track was unable to find a suitable spot on the calendar where the San Francisco Mile would not have conflicted with the $250,000 Shoemaker Mile Stakes (G1) on May 26 at Hollywood Park. A graded race can be dormant for one year without losing its grade. Golden Gates plans to have this race return in 2009. In 2008, its purse is being used to supplement other races in the program.
