UEFA Euro 2004 Group C

UEFA Euro 2004 Group C

Play in Group C of the UEFA Euro 2004 completed on June 22 2004. Three teams (Italy, Denmark and Sweden) all finished with five points, gained by victory over Bulgaria and two draws. These sides were therefore classified on the basis of the results they obtained against each other, excluding their matches against Bulgaria. As the three matches in question were all draws, points gained and goal difference were equal for all three sides, so the number of goals scored in these games became significant. With the teams thus differentiated, Sweden won the group and advanced to the second round, along with Denmark, while Italy were eliminated, along with Bulgaria, who lost all three games. By coincidence, the same group order would have been reached had goal difference across all six group matches been the determining issue.Detailed results of the UEFA Euro 2004 Group C. (Key)

Since all three teams were tied on points and goal difference, the tie-break is decided on number of goals scored in the matches between the teams in question.

Notes

*A draw of 2–2 or higher was guaranteed to allow both Denmark and Sweden to qualify, at Italy's expense regardless of their result against Bulgaria. [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/euro_2004/italy/3832143.stm Italy angry at rivals' draw] ]
