There were 1,154 housing units at an average density of 1 per square mile (0/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.99% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.22% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 38.4% were of German, 11.6% Norwegian, 7.5% English, 7.4% Irish and 6.5% American ancestry according toCensus 2000 . 87.4% spoke English and 12.2% German as their first language.There were 853 households out of which 25.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.80% were married couples living together, 4.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.60% were non-families. 34.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.86.
