Poynton joined the Liverpool Karate Club in 1965. Though only 15, he lied about his age in order to join. His first lesson at the club was with former champion Kanazawa Hirokazu. In 1968, Poynton, who had achieved his 1st Dan, joined the club as an assistant to instructor Andy Sherry. That year he was chosen to join the KUGB squad in competing in Austria for the IAKF European Championship. Through 1985, he was a member of both that squad and the All-Styles teams, representing England and Great Britain. In 1976, he was the Individual Kumite Champion for the KUGB. For three years in a row, he took the Shotokan Cup Grand Championship.

Having broken his shin several times in competition, Poynton began during recovery to serve more actively in administrating the KUGB. Since 1974 he has served as its Affiliations Officer.
