General info
Angra occupies the south coast of Terceira. It is the headquarters of a military command, and the residence of a
Roman Catholic bishop. Its principal buildings are the cathedral, military college, arsenal and observatory. The harbour, now of little commercial or strategic importance, but formerly a celebrated naval station, is sheltered on the west and south-west by the promontory ofMonte Brasil , but it is inferior to the neighbouring ports ofPonta Delgada and Horta. The foreign trade is not large, and consists chiefly in the exportation of beef meat, dairy products and some fish. Angra was claimed to have been founded byÁlvaro Martins , who sailed withDidrik Pining on his expedition to the New world andBartolomeu Dias on his voyage around theCape of Good Hope . Angra served as a refuge for QueenMaria II of Portugal from 1830 to 1833. It also served as refuge forAlmeida Garrett during theNapoleonic Wars .Notable natural landmarks
