List of United States Army divisions during World War II

The following is a list of United States Army and United States Marine Corps divisions of World War II.

Overview

The United States began the war with only a handful of active divisions: five infantry and one cavalry. By the end of the war, the nation had fielded nearly one hundred. Additionally, due to the US Army's method of employment combined with events of the war, the United States did not suffer the destruction of any of its division-size units during the conflict, except for the Philippine Division in 1942. Armored Divisions

*U.S. 1st Armored Division: Formed in 1940, the 1st served in North Africa from November 1942 to May 1943 and in Italy from October 1943 to the end of the war.
*U.S. 2nd Armored Division: Formed in 1940, the 2d served in North Africa from November 1942 to May 1943, landed in Sicily in July 1943, and participated in the liberation of France from June 1944 to the end of the war.
*U.S. 3rd Armored Division: Formed in 1941, the 3d served in NW Europe from June 1944 to the end of the war.
*U.S. 4th Armored Division: Formed in 1941, the 4th served in NW Europe from July 1944 to the end of the war.
*U.S. 5th Armored Division: Formed in 1941, the 5th served in NW Europe from July 1944 to the end of the war.
*U.S. 6th Armored Division: Formed in 1942, the 6th served in NW Europe from July 1944 to the end of the war.

Cavalry Divisions

*1st Cavalry Division (United States): Existing prior to 1940, the 1st served in the Pacific from December 1943 to the end of the war.
*U.S. 2d Cavalry Division: Formed in 1942, the 2nd never engaged in combat. It was assigned to construct airfields in North Africa. Deactivated in 1944.

*25th Infantry Division (United States): Formed in 1941, the 25th served in the Pacific from December 1942 to the end of the war.

*75th Infantry Division: Formed in 1943, the 75th first saw combat in the Battle of the Bulge and was active until 13 April 1945
