History
The structure and constitution of Malda College evolved many times to reach the present point. In pre-independence northern Bengal, there was a temporary college at Dadanchak before Malda College was formally and permanently founded. The college later shifted its premises to Rathbari More, Rabindra Avenue-area of the district town of Malda. Prior to this, in 1943, a report was published in one of the popular local newspapers appealing the public of the district of Malda to donate in order to establish the estimated fund of Rupees Three Lakhs, required to change the Dadanchak-college's location to Malda Town. The much needed land was given by Mr. Jadunandan Choudhury and Mr. Asutosh Choudhury. In a very little time, the people of Malda donated the estimated sum, which helped start the initial work for shifting. On 1 May 1944, the University of Calcutta granted affiliation to Malda College. In the founding phase, the College was affiliated to teach English, Vernacular Bengali, Philosophy, Economics, History, and Sanskrit.
Eminent personalities like Dr. Meghnad Saha and Suniti Kumar Chatterji were supposed to turn up on the day of the official inauguration of Malda College. However, they were unable to grace the occasion. In the absence of the famous personalities, on request of the people of Malda, the District Magistrate, S. B. Huch Barnwell, came forward to inaugurate the college.
