Mullus surmuletus Scientific classification Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Actinopterygii Order: Perciformes Family: Mullidae Genus: Goatfishes Species: M. surmuletus Binomial name Mullus surmuletus
Linnaeus, 1758Mullus surmuletus, the striped red mullet, is a species of goatfish found in the Mediterranean Sea, east North Atlantic Ocean, and the Black Sea.
It and Mullus barbatus are commonly called "red mullets" and often not distinguished, though they can be told apart by M. surmuletus's striped first dorsal fin. See the red mullet article for more information about cuisine.
Despite its English name, the striped red mullet, of the goatfish family Mullidae, is only very distantly related to the grey mullet and many other species called "mullet", of the mullet family Mugilidae, which belongs to a completely different order of ray-finned fishes.
