Linnaeus, 1758Mullus barbatus is a species of goatfish found in the Mediterranean Sea, east North Atlantic Ocean from Scandinavia to Senegal, and the Black Sea.
It and Mullus surmuletus are commonly called "red mullets", which see for more information about cuisine. M. barbatus can be distinguished from the former by a first dorsal fin which is not striped.
There are two subspecies:
- Mullus barbatus barbatus Linnaeus, 1758.
- Mullus barbatus ponticus Essipov, 1927. Found in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov.
