The release date of the mouse is not known, but it is speculated that it was released in tandem with the PlayStation console and existed at least since 1995. It was packaged along with a mouse mat bearing the PlayStation logo.
The mouse was mainly of use to point 'n' click adventures and other mouse-driven games to control the cursor. In later years, first-person shooters also made use of the peripheral to aim the player's view in the same manner as similar games on the PC.
