Sakti is a town and a Nagar Palika in Janjgir-Champa district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh.

History

Sakti was one of the princely states of the Eastern States Agency of India. Today it is located in the state of Chhattisgarh. It had an area of 357 km² and, in 1982, a population of 22,819 inhabitants. Its rulers were Hindu and had a privy purse of 29,000 rupees. The princely state acceded to the Indian Union on the January 1, 1948 thus ceased to exist.

The last ruler was Rana Bahadur Leeladhar Singh, born on February 3, 1892 and succeeded as new rana on the July 4, 1914. The princely family still exists today and is headed by Rana Surender Bahadur Singh, who represented India in their hockey team and was twice a minister for the government of the State of Madhya Pradesh.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Sakti had a population of 20,225. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Sakti has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 61%. In Sakti, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
