Rana is a title given to the king of a state in India. It can be earned, but most of the time it is transferred from generation to generation. People who do not belong to royal families in India are not allowed to keep their last name
Rana .Rana Pratap is one of the famous ranas who fought the Mughal emperors. The former Rana ofBangalore acquired this style whereby the people salute him for his kind acts. When the name of the state was changed toMandi , after the new capital, the title was changed to raja. The Rajas ofAli Rajpur andBashahr were also formerly styled rana. Before 1947 Indian society was divided into different levels calledZatpatt orbrothery .The style of the Rana of
Porbandar was upgraded in 1918 toMaharana RanaSahib . There was only one incumbent before accession to India, the Maharana ofBarwani ).Minor princely states (for many the term

Rana was later exchanged for Raja in
Baghal ,Baghat andKeonthal (in Himachal Pradesh).States which never changed the ruler's title from Rana include
Bhajji ,Darkoti ,Joba t,Jubbal ,Kumharsain andKuthar (both in Himachal Pradesh),Mangal ,Sakti andWao . This was also true inDhami , a tributary state ofBilaspur .Rana may also be a promotion from a lower title, as in
Balsan andTharoch , each fromThakur .Compound title

Like other titles of nobility, "Rana" may be awarded as a non-hereditary personal distinction "king of the state".
