Overview

Several different batches were built and many of them passed into LMS ownership in 1923 and into British Railways ownership in 1948.

British Railways numbers were:

  • Johnson 4' 11" locos (introduced 1885), 43137-43189
  • Johnson 5' 3" locos (introduced 1885), 43191-43773
  • Deeley 5' 3" locos (introduced 1906), 43775-43833

The figures 4' 11" and 5' 3" refer to the driving wheel diameter. Many of these locomotives were rebuilt by Henry Fowler with Belpaire firebox.
