The Midland Railway 3F was a class of 0-6-0 steam tender locomotive designed for freight work.
Overview
Several different batches were built and many of them passed into LMS ownership in 1923 and into British Railways ownership in 1948.
British Railways numbers were:
- Johnson 4' 11" locos (introduced 1885), 43137-43189
- Johnson 5' 3" locos (introduced 1885), 43191-43773
- Deeley 5' 3" locos (introduced 1906), 43775-43833
The figures 4' 11" and 5' 3" refer to the driving wheel diameter. Many of these locomotives were rebuilt by Henry Fowler with Belpaire firebox.
