Webster County High School, in Upperglade, West Virginia, is a public high school, that opened in 1974.

chool history

Webster County High School was opened in 1974. It was the result of the consolidation of Cowen High School and Webster Springs High School. The two rival schools agreed on a new mascot and new school colors. On February 19, 2008 Senator Jay Rockefeller visited Webster County High School to speak with students about technology in education. tudent body

The size of the student body has dropped since the school opened. When it opened it had over 900 students. Presently, on average, during any given year it contains 500 to 600 total students.Fact|date=August 2008

cheduling

Regular schedule

Webster County High School uses block scheduling. The block schedule consists of four total approximately 90 minute blocks, which can contain between four and five classes for students. The warning bell sounds at 8:25 a.m. and students have five minutes to proceed to their first class. First Block begins as 8:30 a.m. and lasts until 10:02 a.m. Students then have five minutes to reach their Second Block class which begins at 10:07 a.m. and ends at 11:40 a.m.. However, Second Block is split into two, 2A and 2B. Block 2A begins at 10:07 a.m. and lasts until 10:52 at total of 45 minutes. Then students who have split block classes will proceed (10:52 - 10:55) to their 2B class. Block 2B begins at 10:55 a.m. and lasts until 11:40, a total of another 45 minutes. After Block 2B (for some, and the end of a regular block class for others). Begins the lunch period for the entire student body, which lasts from 11:40 a.m. until 12:25 p.m., a total of 45 minutes. Then students continuee to their Third Block class which lasts from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Students then proceed to their Fourth Block class, which begins at 2:05 p.m. and ends at 3:35 p.m.. At that time, the principal will make daily announcements over the school's intercom system, and then once the bell rings students are free to proceed to their buses or home, if they drive or have someone picking them up. Advisory schedule

This schedule is used every Tuesday. The warning bell sounds at 8:25 a.m., students then have five minutes to proceed to their First Block class which lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 9:55 a.m. Then students proceed to the classroom of their advisor (who they go to for all four years). The Advisory Meeting commences at 10:00 a.m. and lasts until 10:30 a.m. After the bell rings students have five minutes to make it to their Second Block class which lasts from 10:35 a.m. until 11:58 a.m. (for the entire Second Block). Block 2A begins at 10:35 a.m. until 11:15 a.m., when the bell rings for students with split block classes to proceed onto their next class. Travel time between 2A and 2B is the same as with regular scheduling, in length at 3 minutes. Block 2B begins at 11:18 a.m and lasts until 11:58 a.m. The lunch period begins at 11:58 a.m. and continues until 12:43 a.m. Then, after lunch period students move onto their Third Block class from 12:48 until 2:10. The they go to their Fourth Block class which lasts from 2:15 until 3:35. The end of the day with Advisory scheduling is the same as a regular day. Nickname

Webster County's teams are nicknamed the "Highlanders" using a Scotsman leaning on a sword with a set of bagpipes in his right arm as the school logo. The school's basketball court had a red overlapped WC outlined in white shadowed in black. The football helmets bear the numbers of each individual player.

Mascot

The mascot is most times a local resident or student dressed in Scottish attire consisting of a kilt, and flannel sash.

Webster County High School fields several Class AA sports teams Fact|date=October 2008, including:
* Boys: basketball, football, baseball, cross country, track, and wrestling.
* Girls: basketball, cheerleading, showgirls, softball, cross country, and track.
Richwood High School is WCHS' main rival. The two football teams play each other the first week of the season for the coveted Wagon Wheel Fact|date=October 2008.

WCHS is also the home of the Highlander Show Band. They have won many awards and are highly regarded throughout the country Fact|date=October 2008. Their uniform consists of black bottoms with red jackets and black hats, with silver plumes.
