The Snooker World Cup was a snooker tournament (created by
Mike Watterson , who also organised the UK Championship and who brought theWorld Snooker Championship to the Crucible). The annual contests featured team of three players representing their country against other such teams, but with individual 1st, 2nd, etc., places (not unlike theDavis Cup intennis ).Steve Davis has won the World Cup times than any other player, with 4 titles forEngland .The Snooker World Cup began in 1979 as the State Express World Team Cup before becoming the State Express World Team Classic from 1981–83. In 1985, the event moved from an early to late season and the tournament became a knockout contest rather than a round robin as it had been previously. After State Express's parent company
British American Tobacco pulled out of all sport sponsorships in the UK in 1984, the event had various different sponsors, includingGuinness ,Car Care Plan ,Tuborg andFersina Windows , before the event was terminated after the 1990 event.The World Cup made a brief return in 1996 when it was held in
Bangkok, Thailand and sponsored byCastrol (BP ) andHonda .Venues
