census GR|2 of 2000, there were 11,508 people, 4,506 households, and 3,266 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 12 people per square mile (4/km²). There were 5,452 housing units at an average density of 5 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 92.31% White, 0.43% Black or African American, 2.97% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.18% from other races, and 1.82% from two or more races. 4.48% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 95.3% spoke English, 3.5% Spanish and 1.3% German as their first language.There were 4,506 households out of which 33.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.00% were married couples living together, 8.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% were non-families. 25.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the county, the population was spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 18.80% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $29,563, and the median income for a family was $35,598. Males had a median income of $25,668 versus $17,741 for females. The
