square mile s (1,928km² ), of which, 708 square miles (1,833 km²) of it is land and 36 square miles (94 km²) of it (4.89%) is water.Townships

There were 3,144 housing units at an average density of 4 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 86.58% White, 0.03% Black or African American, 11.77% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 2,506 households out of which 26.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.40% were married couples living together, 8.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.40% were non-families. 31.40% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the county, the population was spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 22.40% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 21.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 94.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.30 males.
