census GR|2 of 2000, there were 21,804 people, 8,722 households, and 6,044 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 23 people per square mile (9/km²). There were 11,113 housing units at an average density of 12 per square mile (5/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 84.58% White, 7.01% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 6.66% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 12.78% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 34.9% were of German, 16.4% Czech, 7.6% American and 5.3% English ancestry according tocensus 2000 .There were 8,722 households out of which 28.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% were married couples living together, 7.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.70% were non-families. 28.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 23.60% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 22.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.00 males.
The
median income for a household in the county was $34,526, and the median income for a family was $43,156. Males had a median income of $29,008 versus $20,859 for females. Theper capita income for the county was $18,888.
