census GR|2 of 2000, there were 22,051 people, 7,906 households, and 5,652 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 24 people per square mile (9/km²). There were 9,725 housing units at an average density of 11 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 70.75% White, 19.07% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 8.10% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 12.97% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 7,906 households out of which 32.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.00% were married couples living together, 13.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.50% were non-families. 25.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the county, the population was spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 103.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $29,366, and the median income for a family was $36,924. Males had a median income of $28,069 versus $18,893 for females. The
per capita income for the county was $14,352. About 14.40% of families and 17.80% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 22.90% of those under age 18 and 15.00% of those age 65 or over.Cities and towns
