Middle Georgia Technical College is a two-year college located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is governed by Technical College System of Georgia. Middle Georgia Technical College has a four-county service area with a presence in each county. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award technical certificates of credit, diplomas, and associate of applied science degrees.

History

It was established in 1973 as Houston Vocational Center, with founding director Carroll Smiley, a long-time Houston County educator, who held the post until his retirement in June 1981. During much of that time, classes were available during weekdays for secondary (high school level) students, most of whom were bused or transported from the area high schools: Nothside, Warner Robins, and Perry High. Evening classes were conducted for post-secondary adults and military veterans. Course curricula included many trades: Graphic Arts–Offset Printing, Auto Mechanics–Bodywork, Metalwork, Childcare, Cosmetology, Masonry, Health Occupations, Food Service, Construction, Electronics, and other courses of varying lengths. Many courses offered journeyman status in trades, while some worked in conjunction with then-Macon Junior College to offer Associate Degrees. Health Occupations also graduated students at Licensed Practical Nurse(LPN)levels; the Electonics Technology program had a co-operative agreement with Robins Air Force Base and other area technology firms to hire selected students of that curriculum for six-month rotations during their training.

Within a few years of Mr. Smiley's retirement, the mission of the school changed, and it was renamed as the Houston Area Vocational Center in 1985, and was granted an expansion to a four-county service area consisting of Houston, Peach, Pulaski, and Dooly counties. It was renamed as Middle Georgia Technical Institute in 1987, and finally renamed as the present Middle Georgia Technical College in 2000.

From 1993–1998, the college was moved to a new 83-acre (340,000 m²) site on the southern outskirts of Warner Robins, although the original campus continues to be used by both the college and the Houston County Board of Education.
