Houston County (pronEng|ˈhaʊstən, and "not" IPA|/ˈhjustən/ like the Texas city of Houston) is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It was created on May 15, 1821 as one of five huge counties, later reduced in the formation of Bibb, Crawford, Pike, Macon and Peach counties. [cite web |url=http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-2349 |title=Houston County |accessdate=2008-09-24 |work=The New Georgia Encyclopedia |publisher=Georgia Humanities Council, in partnership with the University of Georgia Press, the University System of Georgia/GALILEO, and the Office of the Governor ] As of the 2000 census, the population is 110,765. Explosive growth in the county is evident, with the Census 2007 estimates showing a population of 131,016 [http://www.census.gov/popest/counties/tables/CO-EST2007-01-13.xls] . It is part of the Warner Robins, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The county is named not after the familiar Texas military hero but rather after Georgia governor John Houstoun (who used that spelling during his lifetime) [ [http://www.houstoncountyga.com/ Houston County, Georgia - Centerville, Perry, Warner Robins - Georgia's Most Progressive County! ] ] .
