Narayani Bridge

Narayani Bridge

The Narayani Bridge spans the Narayani River in Nepal.

Overview

This point divides the physical location of Gaindakot from the Narayanghat Bazaar. The houses are in the eastern belt of Gaindakot, and the hill is in the North, with a very famous temple (called, Maula Kalika Mandir) on the top. The hill has a dense forest and is now conserved as a community level Jungle.

The river is very important for the polical map of Nepal as well. It isolatees the "Gaindakot" VDC and Narayaghat, which are lying in the different districts, and Zones! Interestingly, this divide is also between the two major developmental zones, from the political map of Nepal!

Look carefully the bottom most bar of the side. It is not a fence-bar. It is the Optical Fiber within the Metal Shield, and runs through the east-west higway. The poles in the partition carries Electricity, Telephone and Cable Networks (TV) lines distribution to Gaindakot.

The water-seen is used for cleaning, swimming, sewage, fishery, boating, and for dying (certainly!). It has some religious issues too, and is considered one of the holy river in Nepal. Motor owners bring their trucks in the river to clean them. Few people catch fish from the river, professionally, or for living. Companies like the paper factory through their sewage-water into this river. And accidentally, many people have died in the river, either by jumping off the bridge, or when they were swimming. The river is quite deep, and looks greenish-bluish, all the time, when it is not flooding.

This bridge is 420 meters long, and has 15 supporting pillars below it. There is a very big water flow around the pillars, which can be seen from the other side of the bridge (missing half side of the bridge). Accidents may occur if boats try to pass between these pillars, because of the turbulent flow of water.

China assisted Nepal by constructing this bridge, back in around 1975. A lot of workers died by falling from the bridge down to the stones, while constructing it. Actually, they were not using the safety belts or ignoring them.
