Athletics
Montgomery County High School has a tradition of excellence in all of its athletic programs. Coach Bart Rison, who at the helm of the Men’s Basketball program turned MCHS into a 10th Region powerhouse, announced his retirement from that sport. Coach Rison will remain as the Head Women’s Softball Coach and as Director of Student Affairs, a position that includes duties corresponding to an Athletic Director at similar 5A high schools in Kentucky. Former Head Women’s Basketball Coach John High also announced his impending retirement from education. Coaches Rison and High led their teams to domination in boys and girls basketball, respectively, and will be sorely missed.Keith Greisser was hired to replace Rison in men's basketball and has continued excellence in the program, taking Montgomery County men's to the 10th Region tournament in every one of his first four years, including a Regional Championship game. Janie Robinson was hired as the new women's coach. New hire Gene Combs replaced outgoing Head Baseball Coach Mike Johnson in 2006 and brings several years of experience to the dugout. Head Football Coach Dan Gooch leads competitive squads and hopes to “Restore the Pride,” a battle cry for the Indian football team.
Coach Nick Pannell of the Infamous Men's soccer team has been one of the greatest soccer coaches to hit Montgomery County High School. Leading his team last year to the Elite 8 of Kentucky with a record of (16-3-1)[1], further than either the basketball team or the football team has been in the past decade.
Renovation and Addition
After undergoing recent renovations and additions, the school has undergone a complete physical overhaul. The campus formerly consisted of four buildings that are now joined entirely under one roof. Part of the renovation included the construction of a new, much needed, $8.1 million gymnasium. Styled MCHS Arena, the facility comfortably seats 4,200. Theoretically, the gym will accommodate 5,000, standing room only, although such an arrangement must be cleared with the Kentucky State Fire Marshal prior to an event. The ample seating capacity allows Montgomery County High School to be considered for hosting the much-coveted 10th Region Boys Basketball Tournament. In addition to classrooms, the new facilities also include an administration corridor, state of the art media center with computer labs, landscaped courtyard and a desirable cafeteria and food preparation area.
