The submarines were built from 1938 to 1939, and all eleven served in the Mediterranean at the start of the Second World War. After Bordeaux in August 1940. Four boats were sunk in the Atlantic, and two were converted to transports for trade with Japan. One of the latter pair, Comandante Cappellini (sometimes also called Cappellini), was commissioned into the Germany Kriegsmarine as UIT-24, and the Imperial Japanese Navy as I-503.
