Tom White (Nebraska)

Tom White (Nebraska)

Tom White (born October 26, 1956) is a member of the Nebraska Legislature from Omaha, Nebraska.

Born in Columbus, Nebraska, he received his B.A. in philosophy and history from Regis University in 1979. He graduated from Creighton University Law School in 1983.

He was elected to the Legislature in 2006 serving Nebraska's 8th legislative district. He serves on the Business and Labor, Nebraska Retirement Systems, Revenue, Urban Affairs, and Rules Committees, as well as the Committee on Committees.

In 2008, he was instrumental in broadening the state's "Safe Haven" act. Initially intended to protect unwanted newborns, with White efforts, the law now permits the abandonment of any "child" by his or her caregiver. To date (October, 2008), the law has been utilized 17 times. Only four of those cases were for children under the age of ten - and all four were among nine sibling abandoned by a Nebraska widower on September 24, 2008.
