July 10 1883 –September 22 1949 ) was a prolificHollywood director, he also did some production, writing, and to a lesser extent, acting work.Born in
Philadelphia , Wood worked forCecil B. De Mille as an assistant in 1915. A solo director by 1919, Wood worked throughout the 1920s directing some ofParamount Pictures 's biggest stars, among themGloria Swanson andWallace Reid . He began working forMGM in 1927, working withMarion Davies ,Clark Gable , andJimmy Durante . In the 1940s, Wood directedGinger Rogers through her Oscar-winning performance in "Kitty Foyle" (1940). Woods daughter was film and television actressK. T. Stevens who first started her career in one of her fathers films, "Peck's Bad Boy ".At one point, he served as president of the
Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals .Wood died from a heart attack, in
Hollywood , at the age of 66.He has a star on the
