London Buses route 297 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, United Kingdom. The service is currently contracted to Metroline.

History

Route 297 was created to replace the withdrawn section of route 46 between Willesden Bus garage & Perivale as a Monday to Saturday route, and later it also replaced route 8 to Willesden via Wembley Trading Estate making route 297 into some sort of circular route.

The Wembley Trading Estate section of route 297, was withdrawn and replaced by route 92 and was later extended on 2 June 1994 to Ealing Broadway replacing route 65. A Sunday service was added on 29 September 1984 between Ealing Broadway and Wembley Arena for Wembley Market, operated by Alperton Bus Garage (the Monday to Saturday service being operated from Willesden Bus Garage).

Metroline lost the contract to run the route on 1 September 1990, and it was transferred to Centrewest from Alperton Bus Garage on days. The route was also converted from Metrobus to midibus at the same time.

Centrewest did not retain the contract upon retendering on 5 September 1998, and the route once again transferred to Metroline from Willesden Bus Garage, and it was also converted to low floor using Dennis Dart SLF / Plaxton Pointer 2.

The route was moved into Metroline's new Perivale Bus Garage to allow a new route 460 (from the split of route 260) to move into Willesden on 28 June 2003.

First London lost its contract for route W8 to Metroline, and route 297 was temporarily converted to double deck Dennis Trident 2 9.9m / Plaxton Presidents (TPs), while route 297's Dennis Dart SLF 10.2m/Plaxton Pointers (DLDs) were used on route W8, which were required to use single deck buses due to a low bridge in Edmonton.

The problematic low bridge in Edmonton was resolved during September 2003, and the two routes swapped buses once again, converting route W8 to double deck and the 297 back to single deck. Later in 2003, Metroline retained the contract for the route, on the basis that the route was converted back to double deck on 6 December using new TPs - this time as a permanent fixture.

During March 2007, road works in Alperton prevented the Tridents from being able to run the entire route, so as a temporary measure an Optare Solo (made spare from the loss of routes H1/H2/H3) was operated as a shuttle service between Alperton Sainsbury's and Perivale "Tifton Road" for connection to the regular service either side.

When routes 7 and N7 arrived at East Perivale on their new contract to Metroline in the summer of 2007, 22 brand new Scania N230UD/East Lancs Olympus double deckers were ordered for the routes, but delayed, so Metroline had to use their own Dennis Trident 2 9.9m / Plaxton Presidents from route 297 for route 7, while buses (Dennis Trident 2 10.5m / Plaxton President and Alexander ALX400) hired from First London were used on route 297.

On 7 June 2008, route 297 was converted into a 24-hour service to replace the withdrawn section of night bus N11 between Wembley Central and Argyle Road "Cleveland Road".
